TRUSSVILLE — Hewitt-Trussville shortstop Ed Johnson committed to play his college baseball at Auburn University on Tuesday.
Johnson, who was a key cog for Jeff Mauldin in the Huskies’ Class 7A state championship run as a sophomore, is 6-foot-1 and 160 pounds.
“Playing for Auburn University has always been a dream of mine, and to get the opportunity is a blessing,” Johnson said Tuesday night. “After meeting with Coach (Butch) Thompson at Auburn, prayer and discussion with my family, and the great advice of Coach Mauldin, I decided to commit today.
“The recruiting experience has been wonderful. I’ve met some great coaches but Auburn is where my heart is. My family is part of the Auburn family and it’s where I’ve always wanted to go. I’m lucky I get to go to the college I love and play baseball.
“War Eagle!”
Johnson had an excellent season defensively and with the bat as a sophomore, including a big game against Hoover in the opening round of the 7A playoffs.
In the 7A final series against Auburn, he was spectacular afield and also drove in a run in the 2-0 final win over the Tigers.
He was selected as 7A All-State Honorable Mention at shortstop after the season.
