City of Clay announces date of municipal elections

CLAY — Trussville resident George Glenn Jr. spoke at Monday’s Clay City Council meeting after the council approved a resolution declaring weeds at several properties to be a public nuisance. The resolution cited an ordinance from February of 2010 that identified plant growth taller than 12 inches to be a nuisance. Earlier, the ordinance resulted in liens being sent to Glenn, who owns multiple pieces of property within Clay city limits. Glenn, who hires someone to keep the lots cut, claimed that the liens came as the result of a single resident’s complaints.

Although the council voted unanimously to forgive the outstanding liens, Glenn urged them to take measures when enforcing the ordinance in the future. He suggested that the council contact residents whose property is in violation of the ordinance and explain what would be required to make the property in compliance. He also asked that complaints be required to come from neighborhood associations or in written form from more than one resident.

Glenn thanked City Manager Ronnie Dixon for his help in addressing the matter.

Mayor Webster announced that municipal elections will be held on Tuesday, August 23, 2016. The elections are for the purpose of electing a mayor, as well as City Council members for positions one through five. They will be held at the Clay Community Center at 6415 Clay-Palmerdale Road from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. If necessary, run-off elections will be held on Tuesday, Oct 4.

Statements of candidacy will be accepted between 8 a.m. on Tuesday, July 5 and 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19 at the City Manager’s office in Clay City Hall. City Hall is located at 2441 Old Springville Road.

The next Clay City Council meeting will be held at 6:30p.m. Tuesday, July 5.
