BIRMINGHAM — There will be a ribbon cutting for the official open of the Interstate 22 interchange at Interstate 65 on Monday June 20 at 10 a.m.

Anyone wishing to attend should enter I22 from Coalburg Road in Birmingham. Governor Robert Bentley and other elected officials from around the region will be in attendance.
Work on Daniel Payne Drive and Walkers Chapel Road, exits 264 and 267, will continue and remain closed following the ribbon cutting.
I22 spans from the Mississippi state line to I65, just north of downtown Birmingham. It is 98 miles in length, and connects Marion, Walker and Jefferson Counties. The project cost a little over $1 million to build, and has taken 32 years to complete according to the Alabama Department of Transportation.
ALDOT also said the road goes through some of the toughest terrain the state agency has constructed an Interstate Highway through.
