CHELSEA — Alabama State Troopers responded to a five-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 280 in Chelsea that occurred shortly after 1 p.m.
Two are confirmed dead, and two were injured, according to Trooper Chuck Daniel.
John Vernon Alexander, 81, of Sterrett was killed when the 2007 Toyota Corolla he was driving was struck by a 2010 Ford F-250 driven by Donald A. Hardin, 68, of Bessemer. Alexander was pronounced dead at the scene. Hardin was not injured. Carolyn Johnson Alexander, 74, and wife of John Alexander, was transported to UAB Hospital where she later died of her injuries. Frederick Reid Tatum, 65, of Birmingham and Lizabeth Lee Crawford, 42, of Harpersville were transported to area hospitals for treatment of their injuries. Erica Lashun Scott, 43, of Chelsea was not injured.
Multiple lanes were closed for more than four hours in order to get the crash cleaned up and make sure all victims were attended to.
