JEFFERSON COUNTY –At about 3 p.m. Thursday, a student at McAdory High School informed a teacher that they had seen a fellow student in a stairwell carrying a machete. The teacher told the administration and the school resource deputy assigned to the school.
McAdory High School and Middle School were placed on lockdown as a precaution while deputies arrived and searched for the student.
At about 3:35 p.m., the 14-year-old male student was located hiding outside the middle school. He fled on foot across the street to a nearby shopping center where he was captured.
When located the suspect had discarded the machete. It was subsequently found by deputies in the area.
The lockdown lasted thirty minutes and was lifted after the suspect was caught.
Deputies learned that the student had been suspended from school the previous day and was not allowed on campus. He returned to school today to prevent his parents from learning of the suspension. The suspect told deputies that he had found the machete while walking around and that he had no intention of harming anyone.
The student was arrested and charged with menacing and criminal trespassing. His name is withheld due to his age.
