Trussville Tribune writers Erik Harris, Chris Yow and Kyle Parmley will be awarding Players of the Week in each high school football matchup of the 2015 season. Players or position groups will be awarded based on more than just statistics. The awarded player(s) will also be evaluated based on the timeliness of their performance. Tribune Players of the Week will be announced weekly on Tribune Sports Live.
Clay-Chalkville 52, Gardendale 27
Clay-Chalkville senior running back A.J. Walker has been a valuable accessory in the Cougars’ devastating offensive attack all season, but he was far from that in a Class 6A, Region 6 championship win over No. 10 Gardendale last week. Walker’s powerful running style was featured against a smaller Rocket defense. He carried the ball 11 times for 134 yards and a touchdown. Walker is awarded by Erik Harris. Editor’s note: Staff miscommunication led to Ty Pigrome being recognized as POTW on Tribune Sports Live.
Hewitt-Trussville 0, Hoover 38
Hewitt-Trussville senior quarterback Zac Thomas saw his season come to an early end last Friday night thanks to a leg injury, but the six winning efforts he led have the Huskies primed for another playoff birth. His dual-threat ability will be missed by the offense, and his experience as a punter will be missed by the defense. Thomas finished his senior year completing 61 percent of his passes while going for 2,289 total yards of offense. He is awarded by Chris Yow.
Pinson Valley 35, Shades Valley 21
With more experience comes more production for Pinson Valley quarterback Jackie Matthews. The sophomore is coming off a career high 302 passing yards against Shades Valley last week in a 35-21 win. He landed 17 of his 30 passes for the 302 yards and four scores, all of which went to different recipients. Matthews is awarded by Kyle Parmley.
