PINSON — The Pinson Public Library has won a grant that will give it a 3D printer valued at $1,299.
Library Director April Wallace didn’t know a timeline for when the printer will be available, but when it is the library give a demonstration at an open house event.
Wallace said the grant also provides training on how to set the machine up and use it.
There is only one public library in Jefferson County that has a 3D printer — the Emmet O’Neal Library in Mountain Brook, Wallace said.
The grant is part of the Young Adult Library Services Association’s collaboration with 3D Systems to build digital literacy and expand access to 21st century tools such as 3D design, 3D printing and 3D scanning for young adults across the nation through the MakerLab Club initiative.
“This is a grand opportunity for libraries across the nation to really advance their libraries’ digital literacy,” YALSA President Christopher Shoemaker said in a 2014 press release. “Teens will have the opportunity to experience digital literacy in a way they’ve never experienced before. We are very excited that this opportunity exists.”
