MOUNTAIN BROOK – The Lady Huskies held the lead for much of the game, but had to fight through the final eight minutes of the game to pull out a 2-1 victory over Mountain Brook in what was called “a thriller” by head coach Justin Pino.
Hewitt-Trussville (9-2) took advantage of a free kick in the first half to start the scoring. Lacy LeMaster delivered a pass to Megan McGettigan, who laid the ball off for Lauren Smith, who was able to finish. The score remained that way until Mountain Brook scored off a penalty kick with about eight minutes remaining.
Smith stepped up again, scoring the game-winner with 3:30 to play. Margaret Newman played a ball through to Smith, and she took full advantage to lift her team to the win.
“We defended extremely well and capitalized on chances when we needed to,” Pino said.
Hewitt-Trussville’s boys team (2-6-2) was in action twice over the weekend, but were unable to scrape together any offense. The Huskies traveled to Spain Park for a Friday night matchup, losing 5-0. The defense rebounded the following night, as the Huskies hosted Sparkman. Neither team scored in the 80-minute contest, leaving the final tally at a scoreless draw.
