MONTGOMERY — Six area athletes will head to Montgomery next week for the 18th annual Alabama All-Star Sports Week.
Two area baseball players were named to the North All-Star team. Clay-Chalkville rising senior pitcher Matthew Calvert and Hewitt-Trussville rising senior shortstop Carter Pharis were named to the team.
The North-South All-Star game is scheduled for Tuesday, July 22 in Montgomery. The North swept last year’s doubleheader 6-0 and 13-5. The North leads the all-time series 17-10-1.
Hewitt-Trussville rising senior catcher Taylor Beshears was named to the 2014 North softball All-Star squad for the July 22 North-South game at Lagoon Park in Montgomery.
Beshears, who also plays third base, is verbally committed to play college softball at Arkansas.
The South and North split last year’s two games with the South winning game one 3-0 and the North prevailing in the second game 8-4. The North currently holds a 22-8-2 advantage in the series, which began in 1997.
One Hewitt-Trussville soccer player, rising senior forward T.J. McGettigan, was named to the North boys team for the North-South All-Star soccer game, scheduled for July 22 at the Emory Folmar Soccer Complex in Montgomery. The North boys lead the all-time series over the South 8-4-1.
A Clay-Chalkville football player will play in the North-South All-Star football game July 24 at the Cramton Bowl. Offensive lineman Josh Davis was selected as one of 74 senior student-athletes to play in the game. Davis, a 6-foot, 298-pounder, was named as an Alabama Sports Writers Association honorable mention player in Class 6A last season as a senior.
The South staged a dramatic comeback in the second half to win last year’s game 22-21. The South holds a 29-23-2 edge in the North-South series, which began in 1948.
Clay-Chalkville girls basketball rising senior guard Kristian Hudson was named to the 2014 North-South Basketball All-Star squad for the 18th annual Alabama All-Star Sports Week competition.
The North swept last year’s competition at Alabama State University’s Dunn-Oliver Acadome with the boys winning 96-60 and the girls rolling to an 84-36 victory. The North leads the girls’ series 15-2.
