PINSON — Pinson native Katie Herron, a junior at Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School, was recognized by the Pinson City Council on Thursday for excellence in science.
Herron won first place in the environmental category of the Junior Science and Humanities Symposia in Auburn. For her project, she studied the effects of sedimentation on a small water creature called the vermillion darter. She also studied its food source, benthic macro-invertebrates. The vermillion darter is a small endangered water creature found only in Turkey Creek in Pinson.
Herron will travel to Washington D.C. to represent Alabama in the USA Science and Engineering Festival on April 26-27.
