TRUSSVILLE — Hewitt-Trussville High School exceptional education teacher Carrie Jones is one of 152 nominees for Alabama’s 2014-2015 Teacher of the Year, according to a release from the Alabama State Department of Education.
Two educators in the 152-person list will be Alabama’s 2014-2015 Teacher of the Year and Alternate State Teacher of the Year.

Jones earlier this year won a Gatekeeper award at the Trussville Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual banquet. Jones and Independence Place won in the group category. She’s the executive director of Independence Place, a nonprofit organization created to meet the social and recreation of special needs adults.
The program, temporarily housed on the campus of First Baptist Church of Trussville, is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Her design of the Life Skills Academy at Hewitt-Trussville High School provides a full-scale apartment used to prepare many of her students with basic independent living skills for day-to-day functioning.
