TRUSSVILLE — Class 6A No. 9 Hewitt-Trussville beat Area 12 opponent Gardendale 8-2 on Tuesday, earning head coach Jeff Mauldin his 450th career win.
Mauldin, in his second season at Hewitt-Trussville, is now 56-19 as the Huskies head coach.
In the game, senior Blake Bailey earned the win, pitching five innings and allowing just two runs on two hits. He struck out five. Senior Michael Busby allowed just two hits in two innings of relief.
Junior shortstop Carter Pharis had a single, double, two runs scored and an RBI. Junior outfielder Quin Jackson had a double and two singles, and scored two runs. Senior Riley Stokes added a two-run double.
Hewitt-Trussville won a school-record 34 games last season, falling in the Class 6A state championship series to Pelham. Mauldin spent the previous six seasons at Pelham, where he compiled a 176-51 record. Prior to that, he was the head coach at Clay-Chalkville from 2000-2006, where he won a state championship in 2003. His 2005 and 2006 teams at Clay-Chalkville were the state runners-up. His career record at Clay-Chalkville was 218-62.
Mauldin’s career record as a head coach is now 450-132.
Hewitt-Trussville hosts Gardendale on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at Phil English Field.
