TRUSSVILLE — The addition of a bicycle/walking trail along Trussville-Clay Road is still in the “planning stage,” Trussville Mayor Gene Melton said last week.
The original plan was to add a bike/walking lane from Poplar Street to Hewitt-Trussville Middle School along Trussville-Clay Road, a nearly two-mile stretch of roadway. Melton, however, said last week that it was determined that from Anderson Circle to Happy Hollow Road could not connect due to the steep shoulders of the road.

The alternative route being considered, Melton said, is from the Trussville Sports Complex entrance at Happy Hollow Road to Trussville-Clay Road and then to Hewitt-Trussville Middle School.
In December 2011, the Trussville City Council approved up to $30,000 for a contract with LBYD Civil and Structural Engineering to engineer the bicycle/walking trail along Trussville-Clay Road. Former Trussville City Council President Wayne Taylor said at the time that the lane would be on just one side of Trussville-Clay Road and would require about 8 to 10 feet of additional pavement.
Melton said there is no timetable on when this project could begin and be finished.
“I am looking to be able to tie this in with the Trussville-Clay Road and Husky Parkway road improvement in the near future,” Melton said.
