TRUSSVILLE — Hewitt-Trussville senior runner Veronica Lyle is one of the top 800-meter runners in the United States.
Lyle on Jan. 25 ran the 800-meter in 2:12.98 at the Last Chance Invitational at the Birmingham Crossplex, the third-fastest time in the U.S. Mary Cain, who competed in the 2013 World Championships in Athletics in Moscow, is No. 1.
“She has the heart of a champion,” said Hewitt-Trussville Athletics Director Karen Johns.
In the Last Chance Invitational, the second-place runner finished in 2:15.59.
Lyle, a University of Alabama commitment, won the AHSAA Class 6A cross country state championship in November. She beat the second-place finisher by 11 seconds.
Lyle last year won the individual 5,000-meter cross country race at the Scottsboro Invitational. She placed seventh at the Chickasaw Trials Invitational in the 5,000-meter run and fourth in the same race at the Montevallo Early Bird Classic.
