BIRMINGHAM — Jacksonville State’s Bill Clark has stepped down from his position as head football coach and is expected to be named to take over the University of Alabama-Birmingham football program in a news conference today.
Clark replaces Garrick McGee, who had a 5-19 record in two seasons on the Southside before leaving to take over as offensive coordinator at Louisville.

Clark, a Jacksonville State University alum, led Prattville High School to two Class 6A state championships before joining the University of South Alabama as defensive coordinator, where his defenses ranked among the best in the nation. JSU won its first Division I playoff game under Clark and posted 11 wins in his only season at the school.
According to multiple media sources, Clark met with his Gamecock players on Tuesday and informed them that he was moving on to UAB. JSU moved quickly to name assistant coach John Grass as head coach.
In a statement released by JSU, school president William A. Meehan said, “We’re very proud for Bill and the success that he had at Jacksonville State. He is a JSU grad and we are excited about his personal success and we are grateful for the success he brought to the Gamecocks this year.”
UAB has scheduled a press conference for 3 p.m. Wednesday.
