Trussville’s Downtown Redevelopment Authority on Thursday scheduled an Aug. 15 public hearing to consider paying to divide the former Food World building on Main Street into two spots for a grocery store and fitness center.
The hearing will be at Trussville City Hall at 7 p.m.
Authority Chairman Jef Freeman could not disclose how much it will cost the city to convert the building to make room for Triple N Enterprises and 24e Fitness. The cost should come to light at the Aug. 15 meeting.
“It’s going to look good,” Freeman said. “I think it’s going to be a real positive for downtown Trussville.”
The authority’s attorney, Scott Barnett, said the two tenants’ leases are “partially executed.” The leases have been handed off to Mayor Gene Melton and will need approval of the Trussville City Council.
“I think everything is moving on track,” Freeman said.
The city has spent about $22,000 per month for rent on the building since leasing it in October 2011. The city spent $250,000 to end a 15-year lease with America’s Thrift Stores, which had planned to open a store there.
The Food World building has been vacant since 2010.
